What Is the Muffle Furnace Used For?
Cement that has been stored for a long time or exposed to damp air takes up water and carbon dioxide, and the loss on ignition test measures how much of this volatile matter a sample holds. A portion is weighed, placed in the hot chamber and ignited until its mass stops changing, then cooled and weighed again. The mass lost, expressed as a percentage of the starting mass, is reported with the chemical analysis of the cement or building lime and helps judge its condition before use. The standard listed for the furnace is EN 196-2.
What to Specify When Ordering

Frequently Asked Questions
Which test is the Muffle Furnace intended for?
It is intended for the loss on ignition test on cement and building lime, in which a weighed sample is strongly heated and the loss in mass is recorded.
What maximum temperature and power rating does it have?
The furnace reaches a maximum temperature of 1200 °C, and its heating has a power rating of 4200 W.
What size of chamber is provided?
The heated chamber has inside dimensions of 210 × 280 × 145 mm, given in the order length, width and height.
How much space and weight should be allowed for?
The overall dimensions are 510 × 650 × 650 mm, and the furnace weighs approximately 70 kg, so the bench or stand under it must carry that load.
What does a high loss on ignition say about a cement?
A high value usually shows that the cement has taken up moisture and carbon dioxide from the air during storage, so the result is used to judge its condition before use.
What should an export enquiry for the furnace include?
An export enquiry should state the quantity, the destination country and port or city, delivery terms such as FOB or CIF, any packing requirements and any tender reference.
