What Is the Flow Cone Apparatus Used For?
For grouts and similar fluids, the time taken to flow through a standard opening is a direct measure of fluidity, used to check that a mix will pump and fill ducts or voids. The material is poured through the 1.5 mm sieve into the cone with the nozzle closed, so that lumps are held back, and the nozzle is then opened. The time taken for the material to run out through the nozzle into the 1 litre cup is recorded, a shorter time meaning a more fluid mix, and nozzles from 8 to 13 mm let the opening suit the material. The standards listed are EN 445, NF P18-358 and NF P18-507.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of apparatus required.
- Nozzles — any of the 8, 9, 11 and 13 mm int. dia. nozzles needed in addition to the 10 mm nozzle supplied.
Frequently Asked Questions
What materials can the Flow Cone Apparatus test?
Mortars, grouts, muds and many other fluid materials can be tested; their flow properties are judged from the time they take to run out of the cone.
What are the cone dimensions?
The stainless steel cone has an inside upper diameter of 150 mm and a height of 280 mm, and with the 10 mm nozzle fitted the total height is 350 mm.
What comes with the apparatus?
It is supplied with a 150 mm diameter sieve with 1.5 mm opening, a 10 mm diameter nozzle with fitting bush and a cup of 1 litre capacity, with the cone on its metal stand.
Which other nozzle sizes can be fitted?
Besides the 10 mm nozzle, the cone can be fitted with nozzles of 8, 9, 11 and 13 mm internal diameter to suit materials of different fluidity.
Why is the material sieved first?
Passing it through the 1.5 mm sieve holds back lumps and coarse particles that could block the nozzle and give a falsely long flow time.
Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed for the Flow Cone Apparatus are EN 445, NF P18-358 and NF P18-507, and the apparatus weighs approximately 10 kg.
