What Is the Sand Content of Drilling Muds Used For?
Sand carried in a drilling mud wears pumps and fittings and adds weight to the fluid, so its content is checked as part of routine mud testing. A measured volume of mud is diluted with water and washed through the 200-mesh sieve until the water runs clear, and the particles left on the screen are the sand fraction. The sieve is then turned over and the retained sand is washed back out through the funnel, so that its volume can be measured and expressed as a percentage of the mud sample.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Sand Content of Drilling Muds kit measure?
The kit is a full sieve analysis set used to find how much sand a drilling mud contains, meaning the particles too coarse to pass its 200-mesh screen.
What sieve does the kit use?
It uses a special 2¼ inch diameter sieve of 200 mesh, fastened inside a collar that has a small funnel fitted at the top and at the bottom.
Why is a funnel fitted at each end?
With funnels at the top and bottom of the collar, the mud can be poured in from one side and the retained sand washed back out from the other after the sieve is turned over.
