What Is the Carbon Dioxide Content in Cement Used For?

Carbon dioxide in cement comes mainly from carbonate, such as limestone added during grinding or lime that has carbonated in storage, so its content is a check on composition and condition. A weighed sample is placed in the distillation flask and acid is run in from the dropping funnel while the mantle heater warms the flask. The released gas is swept along by a stream of air or gas cleaned in the absorption tower, passes the condenser, the sulphuric acid wash bottle and the U-tubes that remove hydrogen sulphide and water, and is taken up in the weighed absorption tubes, whose gain in mass gives the carbon dioxide content. The standard listed for this determination is EN 196-2.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of sets required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Carbon Dioxide Content in Cement set measure?
It determines the carbon dioxide content of cement by releasing the gas from a weighed sample and collecting it in absorption tubes weighed before and after; the standard listed is EN 196-2.

Which items are in the set?
A Y-piece with Mohr clip, CO2 absorption tower, dropping funnel, distillation flask with electric mantle heater and three-armed still head, condenser, sulphuric acid wash bottle, two absorption U-tubes and three absorption tubes.

Why are there three absorption tubes?
The three tubes take up water and carbon dioxide; two of them are weighed to give the result, and the third, at the end of the train, protects the weighed tubes.

What do the two U-tubes remove?
One U-tube absorbs hydrogen sulphide and the other absorbs water, so that only carbon dioxide reaches the weighed absorption tubes.

Are the chemicals supplied?
No. The chemicals are not included and are obtained separately; the set itself, with its flask, heater, condenser and tubes, has a gross weight of approximately 8 kg.

What should an export enquiry state?
Give the number of sets, the country of destination with its port or city, delivery terms such as CIF or FOB, packing requirements and, where relevant, the tender reference.
