What Is the Vicat Needle Apparatus With Dashpot Used For?
Standard consistency is the water content at which cement paste offers a set resistance to the plunger, and it fixes the paste used in later setting time and soundness tests. The operator fills the Vicat mould on its glass base plate with paste, brings the consistency plunger to the surface, releases it and notes how far it sinks; trial pastes are mixed until the required penetration is reached. The initial needle and then the final needle are used in the same frame at intervals as the paste stiffens, with the dashpot lowering each one gently so that a sudden drop does not upset the reading.
