What Is the Laboratory Cement Autoclave Used For?
Cement that contains too much free magnesia or free lime can swell and crack long after it has set, and autoclaving brings this out in a short time by exposing hardened test bars to high-pressure steam. The bars are measured for length and set upright in the rack above the water in the cylinder. The heaters then raise the pressure, which is watched on the gauge and held by the regulator and PID controller for the test period, while the spring-loaded safety valve guards against overpressure. After cooling, the bars are measured again, and the increase in length is reported as the autoclave expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which tests is the Laboratory Cement Autoclave used for?
It is used for accelerated soundness tests on cement and for the autoclave expansion test, in which test bars are exposed to high-pressure steam and their change in length measured.
How are the specimens held inside?
A test bar holder and a dedicated rack keep the specimens in a vertical position above the water level, so every bar is exposed to the steam in the same way.
Which controls are fitted?
The control unit carries a pressure gauge, a pressure regulator, power lights and power switches for the electric heating units, and a PID controller with RTO controls the heater.
What safety features does it have?
A spring-loaded safety valve is fitted with the pressure gauge, and the pressure regulator and PID heater control keep the vessel at the set conditions.
Are the temperature and pressure displays digital?
Temperature is set and read on a digital controller, while pressure is shown on an analog gauge, which is the arrangement in which the autoclave is offered.
Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed for the Laboratory Cement Autoclave are IS 4031-1968, IS 1624-1960, ASTM C 151 and ASTM C 141.
