Le Chatelier Moulds
Product Code : EL-CTLE-10338
Le Chatelier Moulds (code EL-CTLE-10338) are moulds for the soundness test on cement, each formed as a split cylinder held closed by spring tension, from which the expansion of the set paste is measured. Each cylinder measures 30 mm across inside and 30 mm in height, carries an O ring and has two indicator stems placed 165 mm from its centre line, and the moulds come singly, in packs of 6 or as a soundness kit with 50 mm square glass plates.

What Are the Le Chatelier Moulds Used For?
A soundness test shows whether a cement will expand harmfully after it has set, an effect usually caused by free lime or magnesia that hydrates slowly. Cement paste is filled into each mould standing on a glass plate, covered with a second plate and kept moist, and the distance between the tips of the two indicator stems is then measured. The moulds are heated in the water bath, and once they have cooled the tips are measured again; the increase in separation, magnified by the long stems, is the expansion. Two or three moulds make up one test, and the standards listed are EN 196-3, 450-1, 459-2 and EN ISO 9597.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of moulds, packs or kits required.
- Package — a single mould, a pack of 6 moulds or the Le Chatelier Soundness Kit with 50 mm sq. glass plates.
- Water bath — whether the water bath needed to perform the test is also wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many moulds does one soundness test need?
Two or three moulds are needed for each test, and a water bath is also required to carry out the test with them.
What are the dimensions of each mould?
The split cylinder has a 30 mm internal diameter and a 30 mm height, and the two indicator stems sit 165 mm out from the cylinder centre line.
In which packages are the moulds supplied?
Three packages are offered: a single mould, individually checked and identified by a serial number; a pack of 6 moulds; and the Le Chatelier Soundness Kit.
What does the Le Chatelier Soundness Kit contain?
The kit holds Le Chatelier moulds and 50 mm square glass plates, giving all the accessories needed to perform the test and to check the moulds themselves.
Why are the indicator stems so long?
Any opening of the split in the cylinder is magnified at the tips of the long stems, so a small expansion of the cement shows as a larger, easily measured change in their separation.
Which standards are listed for the moulds?
The standards listed for the Le Chatelier Moulds are EN 196-3, 450-1, 459-2 and EN ISO 9597.
