What Is the Reactivity Test Apparatus Used For?
Quicklime reacts with water and releases heat, and the speed of the resulting temperature rise, its reactivity, shows how the lime will behave when it is slaked and used. A measured quantity of water is placed in the Dewar vessel, the stirring motor is started and the ground quicklime sample is added. The thermometer follows the temperature as it climbs, and the readings plotted against time give the reactivity curve, from which the time to reach a given temperature rise is taken. With the datalog version the readings are logged and downloaded to a PC over the serial cable. The standard listed for it is EN 459-2.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of apparatus required.
- Version — with digital thermometer, or with advanced datalog thermometer, temperature probe, serial cable and download software.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Reactivity Test Apparatus used for?
Ground quicklime is tested for its reactivity with it: the sample is stirred into water in the Dewar vessel and the rise in temperature is followed over time.
What are the main parts?
It consists essentially of a Dewar vessel with a capacity of 1000 ml, a stirring motor, a calibrated thermometer, a stand and accessories.
Which two versions can be supplied?
One version comes with a digital thermometer. The other has an advanced datalog thermometer with temperature probe, a serial cable for PC connection and dedicated software for downloading the data.
Why is a Dewar vessel used?
The Dewar vessel insulates the water and lime from the room, so the heat released by the reaction stays in the sample and shows in full as a temperature rise.
How large is the apparatus?
It measures approximately 350 × 300 × 800 mm and weighs approximately 9.5 kg with its stand, stirring motor and Dewar vessel.
