Heat of Hydration Apparatus

Heat of Hydration Apparatus

Product Code : EL-CTLE-10907

Heat of Hydration Apparatus (code EL-CTLE-10907) is a calorimeter set for measuring how much heat cement gives out as it hydrates, with the result in calories per gram. It comprises a Dewar flask in an internally lagged case, a constant speed electric stirrer, a filler funnel and a Beckman-type thermometer with reader; the double bladed propeller stirrer reaches to within 38 mm of the flask bottom, and the Gooch type funnel has a 6 mm i.d. stem and a body about 25 mm long and 25 mm in diameter.

What Is the Heat of Hydration Apparatus Used For?

Cement gives out heat as it hydrates, and in large pours this heat can raise the temperature of the concrete enough to cause cracking, so low-heat cements are checked by measuring it. In the heat of solution method, dry cement and partially hydrated cement are each dissolved in an acid mixture inside the insulated vacuum flask, with the stirrer running and the Beckman thermometer following the small temperature rise. The sample goes in through the Gooch funnel in the stopper. The difference between the two heats of solution gives the heat of hydration, reported in calories per gram.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of apparatus required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Heat of Hydration Apparatus measure?
It is used to find the heat of hydration of cement, the heat released as the cement reacts with water, with the result given in calories per gram.

What are the main components?
The set is built from a Dewar flask in an internally lagged case, an electric stirrer running at constant speed, a filler funnel, and a Beckman-type thermometer complete with its reader.

Why is a Beckman thermometer used?
A Beckman thermometer reads small temperature changes over a short range, 5 °C here, which suits the modest temperature rise measured in the flask.

How is the stirrer arranged?
A double bladed, propeller type stirrer runs at constant speed and extends to within 38 mm of the bottom of the flask, while the stopper holds the thermometer clear of the blade.

How is the sample introduced?
A Gooch type funnel, with a 6 mm inner diameter stem and a body about 25 mm long and 25 mm in diameter, is fitted to the stopper for adding the sample.

Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed for the Heat of Hydration Apparatus are IS 11262-1985 and ASTM C 186.
