Blaine Fineness Apparatus
Product Code : EL-CTLE-10343
Blaine Fineness Apparatus (code EL-CTLE-10343) is an air permeability instrument that gives the fineness of Portland cement, limes and similar powders as a specific surface. A stainless steel cell with perforated disc and plunger works with a U-tube glass manometer on a steel stand, and the set includes a rubber aspirator, a pack of filter paper and a thermometer; EN and ASTM/AASHTO versions are offered, measuring 220 × 170 × 470 mm and weighing about 8 kg.

What Is the Blaine Fineness Apparatus Used For?
The finer a cement is ground, the more surface it offers to water and the faster it gains strength, so fineness is a routine quality check. A weighed sample is compacted with the plunger into a bed of set porosity in the cell, between filter paper discs resting on the perforated disc. The aspirator draws the liquid up one arm of the manometer, and as air is then pulled through the bed, the time taken for the level to fall between two marks is measured and the thermometer reading is noted. The specific surface is calculated from that time, with the apparatus first calibrated on a reference material.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of apparatus required.
- Version — the EN version or the ASTM/AASHTO version, which differ in cell and plunger dimensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Blaine Fineness Apparatus measure?
It measures the fineness of cement, lime and similar powders as specific surface, which is the surface area per unit mass of the powder.
What is included in the set?
The set has a stainless steel cell, perforated disc and plunger, a U-tube glass manometer fitted to a steel stand, a rubber aspirator, a pack of filter paper and a thermometer.
What separates the EN and ASTM/AASHTO versions?
The two versions differ only slightly, in the dimensions of the cell and the plunger, so the version chosen should match the standard the laboratory works to.
How big and heavy is the apparatus?
Its overall dimensions are 220 × 170 × 470 mm, and it weighs approximately 8 kg with the manometer mounted on its steel stand.
Why is a thermometer part of the set?
The viscosity of air changes with temperature and affects how fast air passes through the bed, so the temperature at the time of the test is noted for use in the calculation.
Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed for the Blaine Fineness Apparatus are EN 196-6, ASTM C204 and AASHTO T153.
