What Is the Cement – Autoclave, High Pressure Used For?
Free magnesia and free lime in cement hydrate slowly and can expand long after concrete has hardened; the autoclave speeds this reaction up with high-pressure steam so that the expansion shows within hours. Specimens cast in the matching moulds are measured for length, loaded into the rack and placed in the vessel. The heater raises the steam pressure under the control of the regulators, the pressure is held for the test period and then released, and the cooled specimens are measured again. The change in length gives the autoclave expansion, and the standards listed are ASTM C151 and ASTM C490.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of autoclaves required.
- Moulds — the specimen moulds, listed among the accessories, for casting the 10 specimens the rack holds.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is this autoclave used for?
It is a high-pressure steam vessel for autoclave testing of cement specimens, in which steam speeds up the expansion that slow-reacting constituents of cement can cause.
How many specimens fit in the vessel?
The internal space of 154 mm diameter by 430 mm height takes a specimen rack that holds 10 specimens cast in the matching moulds.
Which controls and safety parts are fitted?
It has a pressure gauge, a pressure regulator, a temperature regulator, control switches and a safety valve, and it is supplied with the specimen rack.
What heater rating and size does it have?
Heating is by a 2600 W heater, and the complete unit measures 450 × 475 × 1080 mm overall and weighs approximately 55 kg.
Why is autoclave expansion measured?
Free magnesia or lime can hydrate slowly and make hardened concrete swell and crack; the autoclave test brings out this unsoundness quickly, so the cement can be judged before use.
Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed for the Cement – Autoclave, High Pressure are ASTM C151 and ASTM C490.
