What Is the Steel Measure, 400 ml Used For?
Entrained air changes the workability, strength and frost resistance of mortar, so its air content is checked on the fresh mix. In the density method the measure is filled with mortar in layers, each one compacted, then struck off level and weighed. Dividing the mass of mortar by the 400 ml volume gives the measured density, which is compared with the air-free density worked out from the mix proportions; the shortfall, as a percentage, is the air content. The standards listed are ASTM C185 and AASHTO T137.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Steel Measure, 400 ml used for?
It is used in the density method for finding the air content of freshly mixed mortars, by weighing a known volume of the mortar.
What are its dimensions?
The measure is made of steel, with a height of 88.1 mm and an internal diameter of 76.2 mm, and it weighs approximately 800 g.
To what capacity is it calibrated?
Its calibrated capacity is 400 ± 1 ml of water at 23 °C, which fixes the volume used in the density calculation.
How is air content found from the weighed mortar?
The mass of mortar divided by the 400 ml volume gives its density, which is compared with the theoretical air-free density of the mix; the difference, expressed as a percentage, is the air content.
Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed for the Steel Measure, 400 ml are ASTM C185 and AASHTO T137.
