What Is the BOD Incubator Used For?

Biochemical oxygen demand is the amount of dissolved oxygen used by microorganisms as they break down the organic matter in a water or wastewater sample, and it is one of the main measures of pollution load. Diluted samples are sealed in BOD bottles, their dissolved oxygen is measured, and they are kept in the incubator in the dark at a fixed temperature for a set number of days before the oxygen is measured again; the drop gives the BOD. The refrigeration and heating, governed by the PID controller, hold the set temperature steady to ±0.5°C or better, with cooling available when the set point is below room temperature.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of incubators required.
  • Capacity — the chamber size in cu ft, such as 4, 6, 10 or 12 cu ft.
  • Options — any of the RS 232 interface, double colour gate with top and grill, fluorescent tube lighting, 24 hrs cyclic manual timer, voltage stabilizer or digital voltmeter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature range does the incubator hold?
It can be set from 5°C to 50°C, and holds the set point with a stability of ±0.5°C or better, using both refrigeration and heating.

How is the temperature controlled?
A Digital Temperature Controller cum Indicator and a Microprocessor based PID Temperature Controller cum Indicator with voltmeter are fitted, and a safety controller protects the controller and the cooling compressor.

What is the inner chamber made of?
The chamber is lined with polished 304 grade stainless steel, which resists corrosion, and has adjustable shelves for items of different heights and lighting inside the chamber.

Which optional items can be added?
Options include an RS 232 communication interface, a double colour gate with top and grill, fluorescent tube lighting, a 24 hrs cyclic manual timer, a voltage stabilizer and a digital voltmeter.

Can the incubator be moved?
Yes. It stands on an angle iron frame at the bottom fitted with castor wheels, so it can be moved within the laboratory.

Why is a BOD incubator refrigerated as well as heated?
The BOD test needs a steady temperature for several days. Cooling as well as heating lets the chamber hold its set point even when the room is warmer than the test temperature.
