What Is the Rubber Tubing Used For?

Flexible tubing joins pieces of glassware and apparatus so that liquids and gases can pass between them, for example from a stopper fitted with a glass tube to a condenser, a gas supply or a waste line. A length is cut from the 3 meter coil and pushed over the end of a 5-6 mm glass tube or similar fitting, where the 5 mm bore grips it. The 1.8 mm wall gives a flexible line for general work, but it is too soft to resist collapse under vacuum, so vacuum lines call for thicker-walled tubing.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of 3 meter coils required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which glass tube sizes does it fit?
Its 5 mm bore slips over the 5-6 mm glass tubes held in stoppers, and over other small diameter fittings used in laboratory set-ups.

Can the tubing be used on a vacuum line?
No. It is intended for general laboratory use and is too flexible for vacuum applications, where the wall would be drawn in and close the bore.

What are the tubing dimensions?
Inside diameter 5 mm (3/16 inch), outside diameter 8 mm (5/16 inch) and wall thickness 1.8 mm (1/16 inch), supplied in a 3 meter (10 foot) coil.

What temperature can it take?
The tubing has a melting point of 230 °F, so it is kept away from hot plates, flames and other hot surfaces in use.
