What Is the Daily Rain Gauge Used For?
Rainfall is recorded as the depth of water that would cover level ground, so a gauge collects the rain falling on a rim of known size and the catch is measured in millimetres. The gauge is set level in an open place away from trees and buildings; rain entering the funnel drains into the inner receiving vessel, where it is held until it is measured. At the same hour each day the collected water is poured into the plastic measuring cylinder and read to 0.1 mm, giving the rainfall for the previous day.
