Laminar Air Flow (code EL-LEAA-10999) is a horizontal uniflow clean bench that passes filtered air across a stainless steel worktable to keep the work area supplied with clean air. Air from the blower passes through non-woven microfibre glass pre-filters and HEPA filters behind a plastic grille, and the cabinet has a thick Perspex front in anodized aluminium framing, UV germicidal and fluorescent lights with separate front controls, and a laminate-finished plywood body on castor wheels.

What Is the Laminar Air Flow Used For?

In a horizontal laminar flow bench, room air is drawn in by the blower, cleaned first by the pre-filters and then by the HEPA filters, and blown in a steady, even stream across the worktable towards the operator. Because the clean air sweeps airborne particles away from the work, the bench is used where contamination must be avoided, such as pouring culture media, transferring microbial cultures and preparing sterile samples. The UV germicidal light is switched on between sessions with the cabinet empty, and the fluorescent light illuminates the worktable while work is in progress.

What does horizontal uniflow mean?
The filtered air moves in one direction, horizontally across the worktable from the filters at the back towards the open front, rather than downwards from the top.

Which filters are fitted?
Air passes through pre-filters of non-woven microfibre glass pleated media and then through HEPA filters, whose pleats are separated by corrugated aluminium foil and which are protected by a plastic grille.

What lights does the bench have?
It has a UV germicidal light and a fluorescent light, each switched by its own control on the front of the cabinet.

What is the worktable made of?
The worktable is stainless steel sheet, set in a plywood body that is varnished, painted and finished in wood with laminate.

Can the cabinet be moved?
Yes. It stands on castor wheels so that it can be moved within the laboratory, and it runs on a 220/230 V AC, 50 Hz supply.
