What Are the Sampling Trays Used For?
A shallow tray gives a plain, light surface on which a sample can be spread out, so that small organisms, fragments and particles stand out and can be picked over, counted or sorted by hand. The smaller tray takes the water and sediment collected during pond sampling, and the larger one holds leaf litter while it is sorted. Between sampling runs the trays are washed and, since polypropylene can be autoclaved, sterilised; their resistance to most chemicals and solvents means that cleaning and preserving liquids can be used in them.
