What Is the Inoculation Loop, PS Used For?
An inoculation loop carries a small amount of a microbial culture or sample, the inoculum, from one place to another, for example from a colony to fresh medium or from a broth into a dilution. In streaking, the loop is drawn across an agar plate in a series of passes so that the cells thin out and separate colonies grow. A smooth loop head glides over the agar rather than cutting into it, and the hexagonal shaft lets the user hold the loop at a steady angle. As the loop is EO sterile and disposable, a fresh one is used each time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Inoculation Loop, PS sterile?
Yes. The loop is supplied EO sterile and is disposable, so a new loop can be used for each transfer, which reduces the risk of cross-contamination.
Why is the loop head made without burrs?
The loop head has no rough plastic edges, flashing or burrs, giving smooth surfaces that streak across the medium without damaging its surface.
What is the purpose of the hexagonal shaft?
The hexagonal shaft gives a better grip and helps the user keep the loop in the right orientation while carrying out dilution and streaking.
Which tasks is the loop used for?
It is used for streaking and for obtaining inoculum, that is, picking up a small amount of culture or sample for transfer, without damaging the medium surface.
