Bomb Calorimeter
Product Code : EL-FTLE-10891
Bomb Calorimeter (code EL-FTLE-10891) is a microprocessor instrument used to determine the heat of combustion, calorific value and sulphur content of solids, liquids and fuels by burning a sample in a sealed bomb filled with pure oxygen. Its stainless steel bomb is tested at 300 atm for 10 minutes, temperature is read to 0.001 °C, 100 results are stored, and an RS 232C interface with Windows based software handles firing, calculation and reporting.

What Is the Bomb Calorimeter Used For?
Calorific value is the heat released when a unit mass of fuel burns completely, and it is the basic figure for comparing coal, oils and other fuels. A weighed sample, pressed into a pellet or held in a gelatine capsule, is placed in the crucible, the nichrome ignition wire and cotton thread are fitted, and the bomb is charged with oxygen from the cylinder and set in the calorimeter vessel inside its insulated jacket. After firing at 12 VAC, the unit follows the temperature to its maximum rise and the software calculates the calorific value, with benzoic acid used to find the heat capacity of the calorimeter. The standard listed for it is IS:1448 (P-6).
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of calorimeters required.
- Optional items — whether a computer with printer, platinum wire or the semi auto gas filling device is wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
What can the Bomb Calorimeter determine?
It determines the heat of combustion, calorific value and sulphur content of solids, liquids and fuels by burning the sample in a sealed bomb in pure oxygen and measuring the heat released.
How is the bomb tested?
The bomb body is machined from corrosion resistant stainless steel alloy, and each bomb is tested at a pressure of 300 atm for 10 minutes.
What temperature resolution does it offer?
Temperature is read to a resolution of 0.001 °C on the differential temperature unit, which covers a differential range of 0 to 100 °C on a 3.5 digit display.
Which tasks does the software automate?
With the Windows based software, it feeds in the calorific values of ignition wire and cotton thread, fires the bomb, detects the maximum temperature rise, calculates heat capacity and calorific value, and saves and reports the results.
What consumables come with it?
The supply includes 50 gelatine capsules, 10 benzoic acid tablets, nichrome ignition wire (20 m, 36 SWG), a cotton reel, O-rings for the bomb and stirrer, and 2 crucibles.
How does it connect to a computer?
An RS 232C interface and the supplied leads connect the microprocessor unit to a PC; auto firing works with the software only, and a computer with printer is available as an option.
