Kinematic Viscosity Bath

Kinematic Viscosity Bath

Product Code : EL-FTLE-10902

Kinematic Viscosity Bath (code EL-FTLE-10902) is a constant temperature bath used with calibrated capillary viscometers to measure kinematic viscosity, the flow of a liquid under gravity or vacuum at a controlled temperature. It has microprocessor control from ambient to 150 °C (302 °F), integrated digital timing of efflux times, automatic viscosity calculation from entered viscometer constants and seven 2 in ports, and is made as a 12 in bath of 22 L or an 18 in bath of 33.7 L.

What Is the Kinematic Viscosity Bath Used For?

Kinematic viscosity is the resistance of a liquid to flow under gravity, and it is of primary importance in the design and selection of lubricants, fuels and other petroleum products. A calibrated capillary viscometer charged with sample is placed in one of the seven ports and left in the bath until it reaches the test temperature; the operator then times the efflux of the liquid between the viscometer marks with the integrated timer. Multiplying the flow time by the viscometer constant gives the kinematic viscosity, which the bath calculates and displays once the constant is entered. The standards listed are ASTM D445, D2170, D6074, D6158, IP 71, 319, ISO 3104, DIN 51550, FTM 791-305 and NF T 60-100.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of baths required.
  • Bath size — the 12 in bath (22 L) or the 18 in bath (33.7 L).
  • Cooling — whether external cooling is needed for sub-ambient work down to 10 °C.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature range does the bath cover?
The microprocessor controller works from ambient to 150 °C (302 °F), and with external cooling the bath can be run sub-ambient down to 10 °C.

How are efflux times measured?
Timing is built into the touch screen control panel, displayed to 0.1 seconds with an accuracy within 0.01%, and entering the viscometer constants lets the bath calculate and display viscosity or seconds.

How many viscometers can be used at once?
The bath has seven round 2 in (51 mm) viscometer ports, and it is filled with water or a suitable heat transfer fluid as the bath medium.

What sizes are available?
A 12 in bath holds 5.8 gal (22 L) and weighs 78 lbs (35.5 kg); an 18 in bath holds 8.9 gal (33.7 L) and weighs 90 lbs (41 kg).

Can the bath connect to other equipment?
It has RS232 and RS485 communication ports, and dual digital displays show the setpoint and the actual bath temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius.

Which standards are listed?
The standards listed are ASTM D445, D2170, D6074 and D6158, IP 71 and 319, ISO 3104, DIN 51550, FTM 791-305 and NF T 60-100.
