Ash Content Apparatus
Product Code : EL-FTLE-10899
Ash Content Apparatus (code EL-FTLE-10899) is a laboratory furnace used to find the total filler content of a material by burning away the polymer from a weighed sample and weighing the ash left behind, expressed as % ash. It heats from ambient to 950 °C through nichrome wire under a microprocessor double display digital PID controller with ±5 °C accuracy, has a ceramic inner chamber of 10 × 10 × 22.5 cm with 100 mm cera-wool insulation and runs on 230 V single phase.

What Is the Ash Content Apparatus Used For?
An ash test shows whether a plastic is filled and how much filler it holds. A known amount of sample is weighed into a dried, pre-weighed porcelain crucible and the polymer is burned away in air at temperatures above 500 °C in the furnace chamber; the crucible is cooled to room temperature in a desiccator and weighed again. The residue is taken as filler unless it is under 1%, when it usually comes from additives that did not burn off, and a magnified optical look at the ash shows whether it is glass, mineral or both. Carbon fibre and carbon black burn off and cannot be measured this way. The standards listed are ASTM D2584, ASTM D5630 and ISO 3451.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of apparatus required.
- Timer — whether the optional microprocessor based double display digital timer is wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the ash content worked out?
Total ash content equals the weight of the ash divided by the weight of the original sample, multiplied by 100%, and the result is reported as % ash.
What temperature range does the furnace cover?
The furnace works from ambient to 950 °C with a temperature accuracy of ±5 °C, controlled by a microprocessor based double display digital PID controller.
What size is the chamber and how is it built?
The internal chamber is 10 cm wide, 10 cm high and 22.5 cm deep; the inner chamber is treated ceramic and the outer chamber CRC powder coated on both sides, with 100 mm cera-wool insulation.
Can the test measure carbon black or carbon fibre?
No. Carbon burns off during the ash test, so percent carbon fibre or carbon black cannot be found, and individual fillers in multi-filled materials need additional test procedures.
Is a timer included?
A microprocessor based double display digital timer with a range of up to 999.9 seconds or minutes is available as an option.
Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed are ASTM D2584, ASTM D5630 and ISO 3451, and the apparatus runs on 230 V AC, single phase, 50 Hz.
