Automatic Smoke Point Apparatus
Product Code : EL-FTLE-10893
Automatic Smoke Point Apparatus (code EL-FTLE-10893) is an automated instrument used to measure the smoke point of kerosenes and aviation turbine fuels, an indication of how much smoke a fuel produces in a diffusion flame. Once the operator has prepared and positioned the candle, it lights the sample, allows a five minute stabilization time, takes three flame height readings at 0.1 mm resolution and reports the corrected mean in less than 10 minutes, storing up to 100 000 results.

What Is the Automatic Smoke Point Apparatus Used For?
The smoke point is the greatest height of flame, in millimetres, at which a fuel burns in a standard wick-fed lamp without smoking. It depends on the hydrocarbon composition of the fuel: the more aromatic the fuel, the smokier the flame, so a high smoke point marks a fuel of low smoke-producing tendency. In the manual method the flame is judged by eye, and the rating varies between operators. Here the operator only prepares the candle, sets it on the conveyor and keys in the sample details; the instrument lights it, measures the flame height three times and saves the corrected result for printing, USB transfer or a LIMS. The standards listed are ASTM D1322 and IP 598.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of instruments required.
- Printer — whether the optional printer for the serial port is wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the smoke point show about a fuel?
It indicates the relative smoke-producing tendency of kerosenes and aviation turbine fuels in a diffusion flame; the more aromatic the fuel, the smokier the flame, so a high smoke point means low smoke production.
What does the operator do, and what is automated?
The operator prepares the candle, positions it on the conveyor and keys in the sample details; lighting, the five minute stabilization, the three flame height readings, the mean and the lamp correction are then automatic.
How long does a test take?
A test takes less than 10 minutes, including the five minute stabilization period before the three flame height determinations are made at 0.1 mm resolution.
What repeatability and reproducibility figures are given?
Repeatability is r = 0.6 and reproducibility R = 0.9, against r = 2.8 and R = 3.8 for the manual test method.
How are results stored and exported?
Up to 100 000 results are kept in a built-in database with sample, operator and calibration details; they can be printed through the serial port, copied to USB or sent to a LIMS over Ethernet.
Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed are ASTM D1322 and IP 598, the smoke point methods for kerosenes and aviation turbine fuels.
