Melting Point Apparatus

Melting Point Apparatus

Product Code : EL-FTLE-10894

Melting Point Apparatus (code EL-FTLE-10894) is a digital instrument used to find the melting point of samples, selecting, measuring and displaying the temperature without a glass thermometer. It tests 2 samples at once, viewed through a magnifying lens with built-in illumination, heats from ambient to a maximum of 300 °C at 20 °C per minute and then at 2 °C per minute to the melt, and has 1 °C resolution, a 100 Ω Pt RTD sensor and 120 V AC, 75 W operation.

What Is the Melting Point Apparatus Used For?

The melting point of a solid is the temperature at which it turns to liquid, and it is used to identify a substance and judge its purity, since impurities usually lower the melting point and widen the range over which melting takes place. The operator loads the two samples, sets a plateau temperature a little below the expected melt and leaves the unit to warm up at 20 °C per minute without attention. From the plateau the heating slows to 2 °C per minute, and the operator watches the samples through the illuminated magnifying lens and notes the displayed temperature as each one melts.

What to Specify When Ordering

Frequently Asked Questions

How many samples can be tested at once?
Two samples can be tested simultaneously, and both are viewed through the magnifying lens with built-in illumination while they are heated.

Does it need a glass thermometer?
No. Temperature is selected, measured and displayed digitally on a 3-digit LED display, using a 100 Ω Pt RTD sensor in place of a glass thermometer.

What heating rates are used?
The unit heats at 20 °C per minute up to the plateau temperature set by the operator, and then at 2 °C per minute up to the melt.

What are the temperature range and accuracy?
It works from ambient up to 300 °C with 1 °C resolution; accuracy is ±1.0 °C at 20 °C and ±2.5 °C at 300 °C.

What power supply does it require?
The apparatus is built for 120 V AC operation at 60 Hz, with a power rating of 75 W.

How large is the unit?
It is 17 cm (6 in) high, 22 cm (8 in) deep and 16 cm wide, and its back feet extend to tilt it to a comfortable viewing angle.
