Aniline Point Apparatus

Aniline Point Apparatus

Product Code : EL-FTLE-10903

Aniline Point Apparatus (code EL-FTLE-10903) is a thin film tester used to determine the aniline point and mixed aniline point of a sample by Method B. An aniline-sample mixture is stirred in a borosilicate glass thin film tube suspended in a 400 mL heating bath, and its film flows over a light well lit by a variable 6 V lamp, so that phase separation on cooling shows as the filament being obscured; a 750 W heater sits under a porcelain refractory top plate.

What Is the Aniline Point Apparatus Used For?

The aniline point is the lowest temperature at which equal volumes of aniline and an oil are completely miscible; aromatic hydrocarbons dissolve in aniline more readily than paraffins, so a low aniline point points to an aromatic oil and a high one to a paraffinic oil. The operator places the aniline-sample mixture in the thin film tube and heats the bath while the pulley-driven stirrers keep it moving, until the lamp filament seen through the film brightens as the liquids become one phase. The bath is then allowed to cool, and the temperature at which phase separation obscures the filament is taken. The standards listed are ASTM D611, IP 2, ISO 2977, DIN 51775, FTM 791-3601 and NF M 07-021.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of apparatus required.
  • Heating rate controller — whether the accessory heater with stepless control is wanted, in the 115 V or 220-240 V version.
  • Bath fluid — whether the mineral oil heat transfer fluid, available at additional cost, is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the apparatus determine?
It determines the aniline point and the mixed aniline point of a sample by Method B, using a thin film of the aniline-sample mixture in a borosilicate glass tube.

How is the end point seen?
The thin film flows over a light well lit by a variable 6 V lamp; once the filament brightens the mixture is cooled, and phase separation shows as the filament being obscured.

What heats and stirs the sample?
A 750 W heater under a porcelain refractory top plate heats the 400 mL Pyrex bath, and a drive motor with a positive drive pulley system turns both the sample and bath stirrers.

Is heating rate control included?
An accessory heater with variable stepless control and a reference dial, offered in 115 V and 220-240 V 50/60 Hz versions, is available at additional cost for repeatable heating rates.

What comes with the apparatus?
It comes with the thin film tube, a 400 mL Pyrex beaker, the cover assembly with bath stirrer, sample pump rotor and cooling coil, the 6 V lamp, a drive motor, two thermometer ferrules, and clamps with support rod.

Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed are ASTM D611, IP 2, ISO 2977, DIN 51775, FTM 791-3601 and NF M 07-021.
