Ramsbottom Carbon Residue Apparatus

Ramsbottom Carbon Residue Apparatus

Product Code : EL-FTLE-10900

Ramsbottom Carbon Residue Apparatus (code EL-FTLE-10900) is a coking furnace used to determine the carbon residue left after evaporation and pyrolysis of a sample oil, an indication of the deposit forming tendencies of fuels. Its thermostatically controlled cast iron block furnace takes 5 coking bulbs, reaches the 550 °C (1022 °F) test temperature with ±1 °C stability and goes up to 650 °C, with a 0-2400 W ceramic band heater, °C/°F microprocessor control and over-temperature cut-off.

What Is the Ramsbottom Carbon Residue Apparatus Used For?

The carbon residue of an oil is the coke-like deposit it leaves when heated strongly without enough air to burn it, and it indicates how far a fuel or oil will tend to form deposits in burners, engines or refinery units. A weighed sample is placed in a coking bulb, which goes into one of the 5 positions of the cast iron block held at the 550 °C test temperature; the oil evaporates and pyrolyses, and after cooling the bulb is weighed again to give the residue as a percentage of the sample. The standards listed are ASTM D524 and D6074, IP 14, ISO 4262, FTM 791-5002 and NF T 60-117.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of apparatus required.
  • Power supply — the 115 V 60 Hz version or the 220-240 V 50/60 Hz version.
  • Extra cost options — whether communications software (RS232) or ramp-to-set is wanted.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many samples can be run at once?
The coking furnace holds 5 coking bulbs, so five samples can be tested in the cast iron block at the same time.

What temperatures does the furnace work at?
It reaches the standard test temperature of 550 °C (1022 °F) and holds it with ±1 °C stability; the maximum temperature is 650 °C (1200 °F).

How is the furnace protected against overheating?
An over temperature control circuit automatically interrupts power to the unit if the block temperature exceeds the programmed cut-off point, protecting both operator and equipment.

What electrical supplies are offered?
Two versions are listed: 115 V 60 Hz single phase drawing 20.8 A, and 220-240 V 50/60 Hz single phase drawing 10.9 A, both feeding a 0-2400 W ceramic band heater.

What does the carbon residue show?
The residue left after evaporation and pyrolysis indicates the deposit forming tendencies of fuels and gives guidelines for the processing of refinery products.

Which standards are listed for it?
The standards listed are ASTM D524, D6074, IP 14, ISO 4262, FTM 791-5002 and NF T 60-117.
