Red Wood Viscometer
Product Code : EL-FTLE-10888
Red Wood Viscometer (code EL-FTLE-10888) is a stainless steel viscometer used for Redwood viscosity tests, in which a liquid's flow time through an orifice is measured at a controlled bath temperature. It has digital temperature regulation with ±0.1 °C stability, an over-temperature alarm, an insulated double wall, a motorized stirrer and a bath of about 7 litres, weighs 12 kg and is offered with orifice No.1 or No.2 in 1, 2 or 3-position models.

What Is the Red Wood Viscometer Used For?
Redwood viscosity is expressed as the time in seconds that a fixed volume of oil takes to flow out of the oil cup through a standard orifice at a set temperature, giving a direct comparison of how thick different oils are. The operator fills the bath through the gauged fill point, brings it to temperature with the heater and motorized stirrer, fills the brass oil cup, then lifts the ball-ended rod and times the outflow. The No.1 orifice is used where flow times fall within 20-2000 seconds and the No.2 orifice for slower liquids above 2000 seconds. The standard listed for it is IP 70.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of viscometers required.
- Orifice — Redwood orifice No.1 for flow times of 20-2000 seconds, or No.2 for flow times above 2000 seconds.
- Positions — the 1, 2 or 3-position model.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between orifice No.1 and No.2?
Orifice No.1 suits liquids with flow times of 20-2000 seconds and works from ambient to 95 °C at 800 W; orifice No.2 suits flow times above 2000 seconds and works up to 250 °C at 1200 W.
How many test positions are available?
Models are made with 1, 2 or 3 positions, and each comes with a brass oil cup with a closing-ball ended rod, a cup cover and levelling screws.
How steady is the bath temperature?
Digital temperature regulation holds the bath with a stability of ±0.1 °C, and an over-temperature alarm and an insulated double wall are fitted to protect the operator.
How is the bath filled and drained?
A single gauge fill point, visible from outside, lets the bath be filled without overflow, an internal indicator warns of a low liquid level, and an in-bath drain plug empties it after the test.
What are the bath capacity, weight and electrical supply?
The bath holds about 7 litres, the unit weighs 12 kg (26.45 lbs) and it runs on 230 V ±3% at 50/60 Hz.
Which standard is listed for it?
The standard listed for it is IP 70, given as the applicable test method, and the viscometer can be carried for field use as well as used in the laboratory.
