Vapour Absorption Refrigeration Trainer
Product Code : EL-RAACLE-10786
Vapour Absorption Refrigeration Trainer (code EL-RAACLE-10786) is an experimental unit showing how absorption refrigeration works, with an ammonia-water solution as working medium, ammonia as the refrigerant and hydrogen as auxiliary gas. The cycle is driven by a 125 W electric heater, an adjustable 50 W evaporator heater applies the load, and four temperature points from -80 to 180 °C are measured.

What Is the Vapour Absorption Refrigeration Trainer Used For?
Absorption refrigeration replaces the mechanical compressor with heat: ammonia is driven out of the ammonia-water solution by heating, condensed, and then evaporates in the presence of hydrogen at a low partial pressure, taking up heat, before being absorbed back into the water. Because the cycle runs on thermal energy it can use industrial waste heat or solar collectors, small units such as camping refrigerators and hotel minibars use electric or gas heating, and the systems run silently. On the trainer students apply load with the adjustable evaporator heater, read the four temperatures and the heater power, and work out the refrigeration effect and coefficient of performance.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of absorption trainers for the laboratory.
- Electrical supply — 230 V single phase, at 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Vapour Absorption Refrigeration Trainer demonstrate?
It shows the basic principle of absorption refrigeration with an ammonia-water solution, in which ammonia is the refrigerant and evaporates at low temperature when its pressure is reduced.
What heat input drives the cycle?
A 125 W electric heater supplies the thermal energy, and an adjustable 50 W heater at the evaporator provides the load; power is measured from 0 to 150 W.
Why is hydrogen used in the unit?
Hydrogen is the auxiliary gas. It lowers the partial pressure of the ammonia in the evaporator, so the ammonia can evaporate at low temperature without a mechanical compressor.
Where are absorption refrigeration systems used?
They run on thermal energy such as industrial waste heat or solar heat, and small mobile units like camping refrigerators and hotel minibars are heated electrically or by gas burner.
Which results can students work out?
Students find the refrigeration effect and the coefficient of performance and study operating behaviour under load, using four temperature readings from -80 to 180 °C.
What are the size and weight of the unit?
The trainer needs a space of roughly 800 × 750 mm, is about 1200 mm tall and weighs approximately 85 kg, running on a 230 V single phase supply.
