Vapour Jet Refrigeration Trainer

Vapour Jet Refrigeration Trainer

Product Code : EL-RAACLE-10796

Vapour Jet Refrigeration Trainer (code EL-RAACLE-10796) is an experimental unit for studying compression refrigeration by the vapour jet method, with a refrigeration cycle for cold production and a vapour cycle that raises motive vapour for the vapour jet compressor. A 2 kW electrically heated vapour generator drives the jet, which compresses vapour from a flooded evaporator with float valve and 4 × 125 W heaters into a transparent water-cooled condenser.

What Is the Vapour Jet Refrigeration Trainer Used For?

A vapour jet, or ejector, compressor has no moving parts: high-velocity motive vapour leaving the convergent-divergent nozzle entrains low-pressure vapour from the evaporator and recompresses it in the mixing section, so the refrigeration effect is driven by heat rather than shaft work. On the trainer students set the evaporator heater power and the condenser cooling water flow, read temperatures, pressures, current and voltage, and follow the two linked cycles: the clockwise Rankine cycle that produces motive vapour and the anticlockwise refrigeration cycle. Energy balances on both give the coefficient of performance and the behaviour under load, shown on the log p-h diagram.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of vapour jet trainers required.
  • Power — the 230 V single phase build for 50 Hz mains, or the one for 60 Hz mains.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the vapour jet compressor work?
Motive vapour from the electrically heated generator drives the vapour jet compressor, which draws refrigerant vapour from the evaporator, compresses it and delivers it to the condenser.

What are the two circuits?
One is a refrigeration cycle that produces cold; the other is a vapour cycle in which a pump returns condensate to the vapour generator to make motive vapour.

How is the evaporator level kept constant?
The evaporator is a flooded type, and a float valve keeps its liquid level constant while the refrigerant absorbs heat from the surroundings or from the 4 × 125 W heaters.

What heats the vapour generator?
An electric heater of 2 kW heats a tank with a water jacket of approx. 9 L, which surrounds a refrigerant tank of approx. 0,75 L.

Which values can be read on the unit?
Ten temperatures from -20 to 200 °C, pressures of 2 × 0 to 10 bar and 2 × -1 to 1,5 bar, current, voltage and cooling water flow of 6 to 75 g/s.

What size is the vapour jet trainer?
Overall it is about 1300 mm long, 600 mm wide and 1200 mm high, with a weight of approx. 160 kg.
