Re-Sharpening Machine

Re-Sharpening Machine

Product Code : EL-WTMAA-10584

Re-Sharpening Machine (code EL-WTMAA-10584) is a drill grinder used to regrind worn drill bits, holding each drill in a collet holder and running it against a grinding wheel chosen for the drill material. A CBN grinding wheel is standard and suits HSS drills, an SD wheel suits carbide drills, and a left scale annulus is set to match the diameter of the drill being sharpened.

What Is the Re-Sharpening Machine Used For?

Drill bits dull at the cutting lips and point with use, and regrinding restores the point so the drill cuts cleanly again instead of being discarded. With this machine the operator first chooses the wheel to suit the drill: the standard CBN wheel for HSS drills or an SD wheel for carbide drills. The scale is zeroed, a matching collet is fitted to the collet holder at a 45-degree angle, the drill is set loosely and the scale adjusted to its diameter, and the holder is located in the machine before the drill is tightened in its grinding position.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of re-sharpening machines required.
  • Grinding wheel — the standard CBN wheel for HSS drills, or an SD wheel for carbide drills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which grinding wheel should be used?
Choose the wheel by drill material: the standard CBN grinding wheel is suitable for HSS drills, and an SD wheel is suitable for carbide drills.

How is the drill held for grinding?
A suitable collet is inserted into the collet holder at a 45-degree angle, the drill is set in it loosely for adjustment, and it is tightened once the grinding position is fixed.

How is the machine set for a given drill size?
The left scale annulus is first returned to the 0 position and then adjusted to match the diameter of the drill being sharpened.

How is the scale zeroed?
Turn the left scale annulus clockwise to the end, then rotate it counterclockwise until it is back at the 0 position, before the collet and drill are set up.

Why regrind a drill instead of replacing it?
A blunt drill rubs instead of cutting, producing heat and poor holes; regrinding restores sharp cutting lips so that the same drill can go back into service.
