What Is the Wood Working Drum Sander Used For?
A drum sander levels and smooths glued-up panels, doors and boards by feeding them on a conveyor beneath a rotating abrasive-covered drum, giving an even thickness across the width. The operator sets the drum height with the handwheel, reading the depth scale, chooses a feed rate up to 10 feet per minute for the wood species and depth of cut, and passes the work through; panels wider than 25 inch are turned and passed again to cover up to 50 inch. The drum load is monitored and the conveyor slowed to prevent overload, and setting the drum parallel to the table removes crowning in the middle of wide panels.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of drum sanders required.
Frequently Asked Questions
How wide a panel can it sand?
Panels up to 25 inch wide are sanded in a single pass, and panels up to 50 inch wide in two passes, by turning the work round for the second pass.
How is overloading of the drum avoided?
Load-sensing control continuously monitors the load on the drum motor and adjusts the conveyor speed, so the feed slows before the drum is overloaded.
How is the depth of cut set?
One rotation of the top-mounted handwheel moves the drum by 1/16 inch, and a relative depth scale on the handwheel lets the setting be reset and measured for every project.
How does it prevent crowning and snipe?
Tool-free parallelism adjustment sets the drum parallel to the table to avoid crowning on panels over 25 inch wide, and adjustable tension rollers press the workpiece down to reduce snipe.
How are abrasives changed?
The abrasive is held by tool-free take-up clips, so it is changed without tools; the drum itself is removable and runs in sealed, permanently lubricated ball bearings.
What comes with the sander?
It includes a stand with levelling feet and a storage shelf for accessories, along with separate feed and drum motors and an on/off switch with a variable speed knob.
