Jar Test Apparatus

Jar Test Apparatus

Product Code : EL-ETLE-10974

Jar Test Apparatus (code EL-ETLE-10974) is a multiple-paddle stirrer with which water treatment plants test floc formation, stirring up to 6 samples together and uniformly at any speed from 20 to 100 RPM. A 1/20 HP motor and gear train on a mild steel housing drive stainless steel paddles that are adjustable in height, spaced 6 in (150 mm) apart and suited to beakers of up to 1000 ml.

What Is the Jar Test Apparatus Used For?

The jar test is the usual bench method for finding the coagulant dose that produces good floc and clear settled water before that dose is used in the full plant. Equal volumes of raw water are poured into the beakers under the paddles, each is given a different coagulant dose, and the samples are stirred rapidly to mix and then slowly so that floc can form. After stirring stops, the operator compares floc size, settling and the clarity of the water above it in each beaker and picks the dose that gives the clearest water. Speed is set anywhere between 20 and 100 RPM.

Frequently Asked Questions

What speed range is available?
Stirring speed is variable from 20 to 100 RPM, so rapid mixing and slow flocculation can both be carried out on the same apparatus.

What size of beaker can be used?
The paddles are spaced 6 in (150 mm) apart between rods, which allows beakers of up to 1000 ml to be placed under them.

Can the paddle height be adjusted?
Yes. The stainless steel paddles are carried on rods with locking collars, so each paddle can be raised or lowered and locked at the required height.

What drives the paddles?
A 1/20 HP motor with a gear train, mounted on a mild steel housing, drives the stirring paddles.

What does a jar test tell the treatment plant?
It shows which coagulant dose forms good floc and settles to the clearest water, so the plant can set its chemical dose before treating the full flow.
