What Are the Moisture Tins Used For?

Moisture content is the mass of water in a sample expressed as a percentage of the mass of its dry solids, and it governs how a soil compacts and behaves. The tin is weighed empty, weighed again with the wet sample in it, and then dried with the sample in an oven until its mass stops changing; a final weighing gives the dry mass. The loss between the wet and dry weighings is the water, and the dry mass of the sample is found by subtracting the mass of the tin. A diameter from 25 mm to 100 mm is chosen to suit the quantity of material.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of tins required.
  • Material — aluminium or stainless steel.
  • Diameter — 25 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm, 80 mm or 100 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are moisture tins made of?
The tins are made from aluminium or from stainless steel, and the material is chosen when the order is placed, along with the diameter.

Which diameters can be ordered?
There are five sizes, 25 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm, 80 mm and 100 mm in diameter, so larger tins can be used for bigger samples of coarse soil.

How is moisture content worked out with a moisture tin?
The tin is weighed empty, with the wet sample and again after drying. The mass of water lost divided by the dry mass of the sample, multiplied by 100, gives the moisture content as a percentage.

Can the tins be used for materials other than soil?
Yes. They are used for the moisture content determination of soil and of other materials tested in the laboratory in the same way.

Why is moisture content worked out on the dry mass?
The mass of the solids stays the same while the water content changes, so expressing the water as a percentage of the dry mass gives a fixed base for comparing samples.
