Brazilian Test Apparatus

Brazilian Test Apparatus

Product Code : EL-RTLE-10506

Brazilian Test Apparatus (code EL-RTLE-10506) is a small load frame used for the indirect measurement of the tensile strength of rocks, testing specimens of 50 mm to 100 mm diameter with a thickness of half the diameter. A self-retracting hydraulic jack at the centre of the base works against an adjustable cross head on two threaded rods, and a 0-100 kN × 1 kN pressure gauge with maximum pointer reads the load.

What Is the Brazilian Test Apparatus Used For?

Rock is much weaker in tension than in compression, and pulling a specimen apart directly is difficult, so the Brazilian test loads a disc across its diameter until it splits; the compressive line load sets up tension across the loaded diameter, and the tensile strength is calculated from the failure load and the disc size. The disc, half as thick as its diameter, is set in the semi-circular platens or jaws, the cross head is brought down to it and the jack is operated until failure, with the maximum pointer keeping the peak load on the gauge. The standard listed for it is IS 10082-1982.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of apparatus required.
  • Optional jaws — any pairs of jaws needed for 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100 mm diameter samples, beyond the 50 mm semi-circular platens supplied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Brazilian Test Apparatus measure?
It is used for the indirect measurement of the tensile strength of rocks, by loading a disc-shaped specimen across its diameter until it splits.

What specimen sizes can be tested?
Specimens from 50 mm to 100 mm diameter can be tested, with a thickness equal to half the diameter. Platens for 50 mm samples come as standard.

Which jaws and platens are supplied?
Two plain platens and a pair of semi-circular platens for 50 mm dia samples are supplied, and pairs of jaws for 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 mm samples are optional extras.

How is the load applied and read?
A self-retracting hydraulic jack at the centre of the base applies the load, and a 0-100 kN × 1 kN pressure gauge with a maximum pointer shows it.

Can the apparatus be used outside the laboratory?
Yes. The instrument can also be used in the field, with the jack, gauge and platens all carried on the small load frame.

Which standard is named for the Brazilian Test Apparatus?
The standard listed for it is IS 10082-1982, which sets out the indirect tensile strength test on rock specimens.
