What Is the Automatic Level Used For?

Levelling finds the difference in height between points: the level gives a horizontal line of sight, and readings taken on a staff held on each point show how much higher or lower one is than the other. The surveyor sets the instrument on a tripod and roughly levels it, after which the automatic compensator, hung on four suspension wires with magnetic damping, keeps the line of sight horizontal. Each staff is then sighted through the 24X telescope, aiming with the endless horizontal drive knobs from either hand, and the 20 cm (7.9 in) minimum focus helps in confined locations such as building interiors.
