What Is the Plane Table Set Used For?
Plane tabling is a surveying method in which the map is drawn in the field at the same time as the observations are made, so that the plotted work can be checked against the ground as it proceeds. The table is set up over a station, levelled and oriented, and the drawing sheet is fixed to it. The surveyor sights each object of interest through the telescopic sight of the alidade and draws a ray along the ruler edge in its direction; intersecting rays from two or more stations fix the positions of the objects on the sheet.
