What Is the Total Station Used For?
A total station combines electronic angle measurement with an electronic distance meter, so that from one set-up the surveyor can fix the position and height of points as coordinates. The instrument is set on a surveying tripod over a known station, levelled and oriented to a reference point, and then each target is sighted and measured; in no prism mode it reads distances to surfaces up to 650 ft (200 metres) away without a reflector. With prisms as targets it can follow them remotely or automatically, so one person can carry out the survey without an assistant, and the data is downloaded to a PC through the RS 232 cable.
