What Is the Electronic Theodolite Used For?

A theodolite measures the horizontal angle between survey points and the vertical angle above or below the horizontal, from which traverses, setting-out lines and heights are worked out. The surveyor sets the instrument on a tripod over the station mark using the 3X optical plummet, levels it with the plate and circular levels, sights each target through the 30X telescope and reads the angles on the two-line LCD on either side of the instrument. The auto vertical compensator corrects vertical readings for small tilts within its working range, and the stadia ratio of 100 lets distances be found from a staff. Theodolites have also been adapted for meteorology and rocket launch work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What angle accuracy does the theodolite give?
Angle measurement accuracy is 2", with photoelectric detection by an incremental encoder and a minimum reading selectable between 1" and 5".

What are the telescope specifications?
The telescope has 30X magnification, a 45 mm objective lens, an erect image, a 1° 30" field of view, a minimum focus of 1.4 m and an overall length of 157 mm.

Can it be used for stadia distance measurement?
Yes. The telescope has a stadia ratio of 100 and a stadia constant of 0, so the distance is the staff intercept between the stadia hairs multiplied by 100.

What does the auto vertical compensator do?
It corrects vertical angle readings for small tilts of the instrument, using liquid-electric detection with 1" accuracy over a working range of +3', or plate level mode, selectable.

How is the instrument centred over a station?
A 3X optical plummet telescope with an erect image and a focusing range from 0.5 m to infinity is used to centre the theodolite over the ground mark.

What display does it have?
It has a segment LCD on 2 sides of the instrument showing two lines, with dual horizontal and vertical angle readings and a 79 mm circle.
