What Is the Computerized Recirculating Air Conditioning Trainer Used For?
The trainer links the air side and the refrigerant side of a simple air conditioner, so that the heat taken from the air can be set against the work done on the refrigerant. Students set the fan by hand, read the air temperature and humidity on each side of the evaporator and use the psychrometric chart to find the enthalpy change of the airflow. From the refrigerant pressures and temperatures they plot the process on the pressure-enthalpy chart, determine superheat, sub-cooling and the isentropic efficiency of compression, and work out the coefficient of performance, repeating at other air flow rates to see how the COP changes.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of recirculating trainers needed.
- Frequency — whether the 230 V single phase supply on site is 50 Hz or 60 Hz.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do students learn on the recirculating air conditioning trainer?
They determine superheat, sub-cooling, coefficient of performance and compression efficiencies, find the enthalpy change in the airflow, and learn to use psychrometric and pressure-enthalpy charts.
Where are the air sensors placed?
Relative humidity and temperature sensors sit on both sides of the evaporator in the air duct, so the state of the air is known before and after it is cooled.
Which components are in the refrigeration circuit?
The circuit has high and low pressure gauges, a pressure switch, a sight glass, a filter dryer and a TEV valve, with pressure transducers connected to the instrumentation.
Can the airflow be varied?
Yes, the fan that drives air down the duct is adjusted by hand, which allows the effect of air flow rate on COP to be investigated.
How are readings logged?
Readings show on digital displays and can be passed straight to a PC over USB with the data acquisition software that is included.
What are its dimensions and weight?
Its overall size is approximately 1600 × 800 × 1500 mm (L × W × H), with a weight of about 230 kg.
