Separating & Throttling Calorimeter with Mini Boiler Test Bench

Separating & Throttling Calorimeter with Mini Boiler Test Bench

Product Code : EL-TELE-10713

Separating & Throttling Calorimeter with Mini Boiler Test Bench (code EL-TELE-10713) is an experimental set-up for finding the vapour content, or dryness fraction x, of wet steam. A separating calorimeter with cyclone water separator is followed by a throttling calorimeter that measures vapour contents between x=0.95 and x=1, with sensors reading pressure and temperature before and after depressurisation. The supplied vapour is at 240 °C and 10 bar, and the results can be worked out directly or on an h-s diagram.

What Is the Separating & Throttling Calorimeter with Mini Boiler Test Bench Used For?

The vapour content x is the mass of vapour divided by the total mass of liquid and vapour: x=0 means all liquid, x=1 dry saturated vapour, and values between mean wet steam. In practice, such calorimeters are installed in steam power plants, for instance after a steam turbine or on a steam boiler ahead of the superheater. On the bench, wet steam first passes the separating calorimeter, where the cyclone separator removes water, and then the throttling calorimeter, where it is depressurised; the remaining vapour is condensed in the water-cooled condenser and collected in the measuring cup. The collected quantities and the pressure and temperature readings before and after throttling give x, either by calculation or with the h-s diagram.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of test benches required.
  • Power supply — 230 V 50 Hz, 230 V 60 Hz or 120 V 60 Hz, single phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does vapour content x mean?
It is the mass of vapour divided by the total mass of fluid and vapour, a dimensionless ratio between 0 and 1: x=0 is completely liquid, x=1 is dry saturated vapour.

Why are two calorimeters used?
The separating calorimeter, with its cyclone water separator, takes water out of the wet steam, and the downstream throttling calorimeter then measures vapour contents between x=0.95 and x=1 by depressurising the vapour.

How is the result evaluated?
The vapour mass and total mass found from the collected quantities give the vapour content directly, or the pressure and temperature readings before and after depressurisation are used with the h-s diagram.

What steam conditions does the bench work with?
The supplied vapour has a temperature of 240 °C and a pressure of 10 bar, and a 10 bar safety valve is fitted.

What are the measuring ranges?
Temperature is measured from 0 to 400 °C, outlet pressure from -150 to 100 mbar and inlet pressure from 0 to 16 bar.

Where are such calorimeters used in practice?
Steam power plants use them, for example after steam turbines or on steam boilers ahead of the superheater.
