Spark Ignition System
Product Code : EL-TELE-10705
Spark Ignition System (code EL-TELE-10705) is a training board for teaching the distributor-less, waste-spark electronic ignition system fitted to some four-stroke internal combustion engines. Built with OEM components, it carries a crankshaft position sensor with gap adjustment, an ignition control module and spark plugs on plug wires, with an electric motor and speed controller turning the crankshaft sprocket. A fault box with 4 faults and test points supports troubleshooting, and the board runs from a 12 V DC supply.

What Is the Spark Ignition System Used For?
In a spark-ignition engine the air-fuel mixture is ignited by a spark from the plug, whereas a compression-ignition (diesel) engine relies on the heat of compression. A waste-spark system fires two plugs at once from one coil output, one on its compression stroke and one on its exhaust stroke, so no distributor is needed. On the board, the motor turns the crankshaft sprocket at a speed set on the controller, the CKP sensor signals the ignition control module and the plugs spark. Students then trace faults introduced through the fault box at the test points, following the wiring schematics, and can take the circuit apart and rebuild it.
What to Specify When Ordering

Frequently Asked Questions
Which ignition system does the board teach?
It teaches waste-spark electronic ignition, the system used on some four-stroke cycle internal combustion engines, on a distributor-less trainer built with OEM components.
How does a spark-ignition engine differ from a diesel engine?
In a spark-ignition engine, usually a petrol engine, a spark from the plug ignites the air-fuel mixture; a compression-ignition engine, typically a diesel, ignites its fuel from the heat of compression without an external spark.
What drives the sensor on the board?
An electric motor drives the crankshaft sprocket, its speed set by a motor speed controller, and the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor has an adjustable gap.
How is fault finding practised?
Four operational faults can be introduced in the connections through the fault box, and students track them down at the diagnostic test points, using the wiring schematics included with the board.
What power supply does it need?
The trainer needs a 12 V DC power supply to operate. It measures 550 × 550 × 330 mm and weighs approximately 20 kg.
Can students take the system apart?
Yes. The various parts can be disassembled and assembled again, which is used to teach the whole wiring system of the ignition circuit mounted on the board.
