Axial Flow Turbine Test Bed
Product Code : EL-TELE-10691
Axial Flow Turbine Test Bed (code EL-TELE-10691) is a small-scale gas turbine test rig on which students start, run and take measurements from a complete aeronautical axial flow engine. The engine has a single-stage radial compressor, an annular combustion chamber and a single-stage, low-mass axial flow turbine, with typical figures of 200 N thrust and 105,000 rpm. It sits on a single-pivot mount behind a removable transparent polycarbonate screen and links to a PC through one USB interface.

What Is the Axial Flow Turbine Test Bed Used For?
The test bed shows students the gas turbine cycle on a working engine: air is compressed, burned with fuel in the combustion chamber and expanded through the turbine, and the jet leaving the engine produces thrust. The operator starts the engine from the PC software, which runs the automatic start-up sequence, and while it runs the instruments measure thrust through the single-pivot mount and air mass flow through the frontal duct. The data acquisition software logs these readings for performance study, and the automatic power-down sequence stops the engine. The unit can go into a test cell or soundproof enclosure, or onto the optional floor-standing frame with its fuel tank and console.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of test beds required.
- Fuel — which of the listed fuels will be used: paraffin, Jet A-1 or JP-4/kerosene.
- Floor-standing frame — whether the optional frame housing the unit, fuel tank and electronic console is wanted.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the engine on this test bed consist of?
It is a complete aeronautical axial flow gas turbine with a single-stage radial compressor, an annular combustion chamber and a single-stage, low-mass axial flow turbine, fired by a glow plug ignition system.
What thrust and speed does the engine reach?
The typical thrust is 200 N and the typical engine speed is 105,000 rpm, with a typical exhaust gas temperature of 800 °C and a mass flow of 450 g/s.
Which fuels can it run on?
It runs on one of paraffin, Jet A-1 or JP-4/kerosene. The lubricant is mixed with the fuel, so there is no external lubrication system to look after.
Does starting the engine need compressed air, gas or a battery?
No. The engine needs no compressed air supply or propane gas to start and no external battery and charger; start-up and power-down run automatically from the software.
How is the test bed connected to a computer?
The engine software runs on a PC, and only a single USB interface is needed between the electronic console and the PC. Data acquisition and educational software is included.
How are students protected while the engine runs?
A transparent polycarbonate screen shields the engine and can be removed for access, and the preprogrammed electronic controller supervises the engine to keep it within safe operating conditions.
