Subsonic Air Nozzle Test Setup
Product Code : EL-TELE-10714
Subsonic Air Nozzle Test Setup (code EL-TELE-10714) is an experimental apparatus for demonstrating the thermodynamic and flow properties of the adiabatic expansion of air through nozzles at subsonic and supersonic speeds. It runs on dry, clean compressed air from an optional compressor or a laboratory supply, and takes three interchangeable profiled and polished brass nozzles, one at a time, in a pressure chest with a traversing stainless steel probe and digital pressure and temperature displays.

What Is the Subsonic Air Nozzle Test Setup Used For?
When air expands through a nozzle, its pressure falls and its speed rises; in a convergent nozzle the flow can reach sonic speed at the throat, after which lowering the downstream pressure no longer raises the mass flow, a condition called choked flow, while a convergent-divergent (Laval) nozzle can take the flow on to supersonic speed. Students fit a nozzle in the chest, set the inlet pressure on the regulator and the back pressure with the downstream valve, then traverse the probe to read the pressure along the nozzle axis. The orifice pressures give the overall mass flow, so flow can be plotted against pressure ratio for each nozzle.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of nozzle test setups required.
- Air supply — whether the optional compressor is needed or a laboratory compressed air supply will be used.
- Power supply — 230 V 50 Hz, 230 V 60 Hz or 120 V 60 Hz, single phase.
Frequently Asked Questions
What air supply does the apparatus need?
It connects to an optional compressor or to a suitable laboratory supply of dry, clean compressed air, which passes through a pressure regulator and isolating valve into the pressure chest.
Which nozzles are supplied?
Three interchangeable, profiled and polished brass nozzles are supplied, each with a mimic that fits on the traverse mechanism, and they are tested one at a time.
How is pressure measured along the nozzle?
The pressure distribution along the nozzle axis is measured by a stainless steel probe carried on a vertical traverse that is adjusted by hand, and a digital indicator gives the probe's position in the nozzle.
How is the mass flow found?
Students use the pressures measured around the orifice in the horizontal outlet pipe to determine the overall mass flow through the nozzle.
Does the setup cover supersonic flow as well?
Yes. It demonstrates adiabatic expansion at subsonic and supersonic speeds, including choked flow at the nozzle throat and boundary layer growth under subsonic and supersonic conditions.
