What Is the Specimen Mounting Press Used For?

Small, irregular or fragile metal samples are hard to grind and polish by hand, so they are first set in a cylindrical mount of thermosetting resin. The operator places the specimen in the mould and adds the mounting material; the press then heats and compresses the charge to the set temperature and force, holds it for the set time and water cools it before the finished mount is taken out. The mount gives a flat, conveniently held piece for grinding, polishing and microscopic examination, and difficult specimens can be handled by changing to another of the specification patterns.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of mounting presses required.
  • Mount diameter — the pattern specimen sizes needed: 25 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm or 50 mm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the press control automatically?
It completes the mounting cycle by itself at the set heating temperature, holding time and acting force, and the operator can change between 4 specification patterns for difficult specimens.

Which mount sizes can be made?
Pattern specimens of 25 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm diameter can be produced, and the press makes 2 specimens in one cycle.

Which mounting materials can be used?
Because the press has a water cooling system, it is suitable for all thermosetting mounting materials.

What pressure, temperature and time settings are available?
Pressure is set from 0 to 2 MPa, temperature from 0 to 300 °C and holding time from 0 to 99 minutes and 99 seconds.

What are the power and size details?
Maximum consumption is 1800 W on a 220 V, 50 Hz supply. The press measures 615 × 510 × 500 mm and weighs 110 kg.

Why are metallographic specimens mounted?
Mounting sets a small or awkward sample in a block of resin so that it can be held squarely during grinding and polishing and stored for later examination.
