What Is the Impact Testing Machine Digital Used For?

An impact test measures the energy a notched specimen absorbs when it is broken by a single blow, which shows the toughness of the material and its tendency to brittle fracture. For a Charpy test the specimen lies across the supports and is struck behind the notch; for an Izod test it is clamped upright and struck on the notched side. The operator raises and locks the pendulum, places the specimen, releases the blow and reads the absorbed energy on the digital display, then stops the pendulum with the brake. The optional gauges, templates and notch cutter help prepare and check the 10 × 10 mm specimens.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of impact testing machines required.
  • Printer interface — whether the optional printer interface is wanted.
  • Optional accessories — any of the V notch caliper gauge, 10 × 10 mm cross-section templates, V and U depth notch gauges, self-centring tong, 'V' notch milling cutter or Izod support for 0.450 in round specimens.

Frequently Asked Questions

What energy capacity does the pendulum have?
The initial potential energy is 300 Joules in the Charpy position and 170 Joules in the Izod position, read on the digital display at a resolution of 0.5 Joules.

How do the Charpy and Izod set-ups differ?
The pendulum locks in either position and the strikers are interchangeable. Charpy uses a drop angle of 140° with the specimen supported at both ends; Izod uses 90° with the specimen clamped at one end.

Which parts are made of alloy steel?
The highly stressed and wearing parts, such as the support blocks and strikers, are made of special alloy steels and are heat treated.

What safety arrangements are provided?
A safety guard protects the operator, the pendulum has a positive lock in both test positions, and a braking arrangement is fitted for stopping the pendulum after the blow.

Which accessories can be added for specimen preparation?
Optional items are a V notch caliper gauge, templates for the 10 × 10 mm cross-section, depth notch gauges for V and U notches, a self-centring tong, a 'V' notch milling cutter and an Izod support for 0.450 in round specimens.

Can results be printed?
A printer interface is available as an option, in addition to the electronic digital display on which the absorbed energy is shown.
