Double Disc Polishing Machine

Double Disc Polishing Machine

Product Code : EL-STLE-10567

Double Disc Polishing Machine (code EL-STLE-10567) is used to polish metallography samples for microscopic observation of metal structures, giving the flat, smooth, scratch-free and mirror-like surface that qualitative and quantitative metallographic interpretation needs. The polishing discs are fitted on a shaft and locked by a nut, the shaft runs in two bearings set in a bearing holder, and the drive reaches the motor spindle through a friction mechanism.

What Is the Double Disc Polishing Machine Used For?

Before a metal sample can be examined under a metallurgical microscope, its cut face is ground and then polished, because scratches and smeared metal hide the true structure. Polishing is the last of these steps. The operator holds the sample face against the turning disc and polishes it until the surface is flat and mirror-like with no visible scratches, then cleans it. The sample can afterwards be etched and viewed to study its grain structure and phases, and the polished face serves for both qualitative and quantitative interpretation in metallography and steel testing laboratories.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are metallography samples polished?
Polishing is the final stage in preparing a sample, giving a flat, smooth, scratch-free and mirror-like surface that allows qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the metal structure under the microscope.

How are the polishing discs held?
Each polishing disc is fitted on the machine shaft and locked firmly in place with a nut.

What supports the shaft?
The shaft runs in two bearings, which are fitted into a bearing holder so that the shaft turns smoothly.

How is the drive transmitted?
Power reaches the polishing spindle through a friction mechanism, the spindle being mounted on the motor shaft.

Where is the machine used?
It is used in metallography and steel testing laboratories to prepare metal samples for microscopic observation of their structure.
