Fatigue Testing Machine
Product Code : EL-STLE-10561
Fatigue Testing Machine (code EL-STLE-10561) is a rotating beam, table model machine for finding the fatigue strength of materials, in which the specimen is loaded in reversed bending. A standard 8 mm diameter specimen turns at 4200 rpm under a bending moment set by moving a weight along a lever, a digital counter records the revolutions to failure, and an interlock switches the motor off when the specimen fails.

What Is the Fatigue Testing Machine Used For?
Parts such as shafts and axles can fail after many cycles of stress well below the static strength of the metal, and fatigue testing shows how many cycles a material survives at a given stress. On this machine the 8 mm specimen is clamped in its end holders, the weight is set along the lever to give the bending moment, and the motor spins the specimen so that every fibre passes through tension and compression on each turn. When the specimen breaks the motor stops and the digital counter gives the number of revolutions; tests at several moments give the points of the S-N diagram.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Quantity — the number of fatigue testing machines required.
Frequently Asked Questions
What type of fatigue test does it perform?
It is a rotating beam machine: the specimen is loaded in reversed bending, so a complete cycle of reversed stresses passes through every fibre of the specimen in each revolution.
What specimen size does it take?
It takes the standard 8 mm diameter specimen, gripped at both ends in special holders and loaded so that it carries a uniform bending moment.
How is the bending moment changed?
The moment is applied through a lever system and is altered by moving a weight along the lever, giving different stress levels for successive specimens.
How is the number of cycles to failure recorded?
The specimen rotates at 4200 rpm and a digital counter records the total revolutions reached when it fails; an interlock then switches off the motor.
Does the machine need a foundation?
No. It is a table model and needs no foundation, so it can be set up on a laboratory bench.
What is an S-N diagram?
It is a plot of stress against the number of cycles to failure. Results from specimens run at different bending moments are plotted together to show the fatigue behaviour of the material.
