What Is the Torsion Testing Machine Used For?
Wire and thin-walled tube are often twisted in service or during forming, and a torsion test shows how many turns or how much torque the material takes before it cracks or breaks. The flat or round sample is clamped in the grips and the geared motor turns one end at 0.1 or 0.2 RPM, or at a chosen speed with the optional variable speed drive, while the pendulum dynamometer indicates the torque. With the autographic recorder fitted, the operator obtains a plot of torque against angle of twist, and the hydraulic damping keeps the loading free of vibration.
