What Is the Laboratory Ball Mill Used For?

In a ball mill the jar turns about its axis, lifting the steel balls and letting them tumble back onto the material, so particles are broken down by impact and rubbing while the charge is mixed at the same time. The operator loads the powder and a set of steel balls of different sizes into the jar, closes it, fits it to the mill and runs it until the required fineness or blend is reached. Larger balls break coarse lumps while smaller ones fill the gaps and grind finer, and because the jar is removable a second jar can be filled while the first one is running.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Quantity — the number of mills required.
  • Jar material — aluminium or stainless steel.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much material can be ground at a time?
The mill handles batches of about 1 kg to 2 kg, mixed and ground together with steel balls of different sizes inside the jar.

What speed does the jar run at?
The FHP motor drives the jar at a maximum speed of 80 RPM, and the mill is rated for a continuous duty cycle.

What jar materials are available?
The standard jar is aluminium finished with paint, and a stainless steel or aluminium jar is offered as the option.

Why are balls of different sizes used?
Large balls break down the coarser lumps by impact, while smaller balls fill the spaces between them and grind the finer particles, so a mixed charge works through the material more evenly.

Can the jar be taken off the mill?
Yes. The jar is interchangeable and removable, so it can be taken off for loading, emptying and cleaning between batches.
